KAILAS Technology – Vibram Megagrip, BOA Fit System and AWS 3.0

KAILAS develops outdoor equipment around the requirements of technical terrain. Its FUGA trail running shoes use specialised outsole materials, fit systems and cushioning constructions for steep climbs, rocky descents and long-distance running.

Vibram Megagrip with Litebase appears on selected FUGA models. Megagrip rubber is designed to provide traction on wet and dry surfaces, while Litebase reduces outsole weight without requiring a conventional full-thickness rubber base.

The FUGA EX 3 uses 4mm lugs, an ECCEVAI cushioned midsole and AWS 3.0, a two-section lacing system that helps secure the forefoot during downhill running. Its lace pocket and four-point gaiter attachment are useful on dusty or debris-covered trails.

BOA Fit System models replace conventional lace adjustment with a dial-based closure, allowing small changes to shoe tension. This is particularly useful when adjusting fit between uphill and downhill sections.

The FUGA DU 2 uses a supercritical-foam midsole and an unusually wide 125mm forefoot platform. KAILAS reports a 27% improvement in rebound performance compared with its reference construction.

For waterproof footwear, selected GTX models use GORE-TEX membranes. KAILAS also offers technical apparel incorporating CORDURA fabrics and waterproof shell constructions. These technologies apply to specific products rather than the entire collection.

KAILAS Trail Running and Mountaineering Gear for Different Athletes

Trail running beginners: FUGA EX 3 combines an 8mm drop, 4mm lugs and cushioned construction for training on mixed terrain. Buyers should check shoe fit using foot length rather than relying exclusively on everyday footwear sizing.

Technical mountain runners: FUGA DU 2 and DU MONSTER are designed for steeper, more complex terrain. Their outsole construction and secure uppers address the demands of uneven ground and rapid changes in direction.

Ultra-distance runners: FUGA Air 8 IV provides 8 litres of carrying capacity for nutrition, hydration and extra clothing. Its suitability depends on the mandatory equipment required by each event.

Fastpackers and mountain hikers: Black Solitude DU 2 GTX BOA combines waterproofing and technical outsole construction for changing weather and mixed terrain.

Climbers and route setters: KAILAS offers technical climbing equipment, including the Clip-up IV extendable quickdraw grabber and a dedicated route-setting waist bag. Safety equipment must be selected according to its certified intended use.

Alpine travellers: The 5000GT 1000FP down jacket and MONT-X PRO GTX shell provide options for layering in cold, windy or wet conditions.

KAILAS FAQ – FUGA Shoe Fit, BOA Technology and Trail Running Features

What is the difference between KAILAS FUGA EX 3 and DU 2?

FUGA EX 3 weighs approximately 285g in size 42, has an 8mm drop and uses 4mm lugs for mixed terrain. DU 2 weighs approximately 305g, has a 6mm drop and features a 125mm-wide forefoot platform designed for steep and technical routes.

What does AWS 3.0 do on KAILAS FUGA EX 3 shoes?

AWS 3.0 is a two-section lacing system that allows the forefoot and upper shoe fit to be adjusted separately. It helps reduce forward foot movement during steep descents and supports a secure fit on technical trails.

Are KAILAS FUGA DU 2 GTX BOA shoes waterproof?

Yes. The Black Solitude DU 2 GTX BOA model uses a GORE-TEX waterproof membrane, breathable upper construction and a Vibram Megagrip outsole. Its waterproofing makes it suitable for wet trails, although water may still enter through the shoe opening.

Can KAILAS FUGA running shoes be used with gaiters?

Selected FUGA models, including the EX 3, feature a four-point gaiter attachment system. Compatible KAILAS gaiters help limit the entry of sand, dust and small trail debris during off-road running.
