Coursera Plus, university partners and hands-on online learning

Coursera was launched in 2012 by Stanford computer science professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller. Its distinguishing feature is a catalogue built with universities and major technology companies rather than courses produced exclusively by the platform itself. Coursera Plus provides access to more than 10,000 courses, Projects, Specializations and Professional Certificate programmes, although degrees and some programmes are excluded. Many courses combine videos and assessments with practical projects, while completed eligible programmes can provide digital certificates suitable for adding to a CV or LinkedIn profile.

Who should use Coursera in South Africa?

Coursera is particularly relevant to South African professionals and students who want flexible training without attending a physical campus. Career changers can follow structured certificates in fields such as data analytics, IT, UX, cybersecurity and AI, while experienced professionals can select individual courses to update specific skills. Academic learners can also access content from South African institutions: the University of Cape Town, for example, has programmes available through the platform. Coursera is therefore suited both to short skills-based learning and longer credential pathways.

Coursera discount codes, promotions and Coursera Plus deals

Coursera uses a direct online subscription and enrolment model rather than a third-party marketplace. Promotions can therefore apply to products such as Coursera Plus or selected learning programmes, with eligibility and prices depending on the offer and learner's location. Picodi.com aggregates current Coursera discount codes, promotional offers and Coursera Plus deals, making it useful to check available savings before subscribing. Coursera states that customers outside the United States may see local currency and local pricing at checkout, so South African learners should verify the final amount displayed before payment.

Coursera payments, digital access, cancellations and learner support

Coursera is a digital learning service, so there are no physical delivery charges or shipping times: access to paid course content is provided online according to the conditions of the selected programme. Available payment methods and the final currency are shown during checkout and may vary by location.

Cancellation and refund conditions depend on the product. For example, the monthly Coursera Plus plan can include a 7-day free trial; cancelling during that trial prevents the subscription charge. For an eligible annual Coursera Plus purchase, Coursera states that a refund can be requested within 14 days through the My Purchases area, although certificates earned during that period are revoked after a refund. Individual courses, subscriptions and degree programmes can follow different conditions. Learners who encounter enrolment, billing or account issues can use Coursera's online Learner Help Center and account support resources.
