Valentine’s Day in Australia: expectations vs. reality

Picodi.com checked the type of gifts Australians would like to receive on Valentine’s Day, how much money they are willing to spend and if their gifts suit the taste of their partners.

What do lovers hope to receive on Valentine's Day?

Valentine’s Day is very popular in Australia: 68% of Australians surveyed said they celebrate Valentine’s Day and 69% said that they will give something to their partner. This probably means that such people, although they don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day, think it’s acceptable to give a gift anyway.

What are Australians going to buy as a gift? Among the men surveyed, the most popular answers were flowers (28%), Valentine’s Day cards (27%) and teddy bears. Women on the other hand said they are going to buy electronics (28%), sweets (24%) and Valentine’s Day cards (19%).

We also asked what gifts Australians expect to get from their significant others and according to women, the most expected gifts were flowers (46%), teddy bears (41%), jewellery (26%), handmade gifts (23%) and Valentine’s Day cards (21%). As for men, the most expected option was electronics (48%), money (32%) and perfumes (28%). 21% wouldn’t mind getting tickets to the cinema or concert, and 16% expected alcohol.

The worst Valentine’s Day gifts according to women are cosmetics (36%), small home appliances (32%), sex toys (29%), sweets (17%) and flowers (11%). Among men, a Valentine’s Day card (52%) and sweets (36%) were chosen as the least wanted.

Valentine’s Day in other countries

We also looked into the financial side of Valentine’s Day. On average, we spend A$79 on Valentine’s Day gifts in Australia, with men spending 24% more than women (A$114 vs. A$92).

How much money people are willing to spend on their significant others?

Among the countries researched, the highest amounts are spent in Hong Kong (US$124), the United Kingdom (US$117), Ireland (US$112), and the United States (US$106). Australia is placed 10th in the ranking (US$79).

In 2021 In Australia, the most frequently chosen gifts are flowers (men) and electronics (women). American men usually choose Valentine’s Day cards, while women choose sweets. In the UK, men give mostly flowers on Valentine’s Day and receive sweets from women.

Methodology

This report is based on results of a survey among over 11,000 people from 38 selected countries where Valentine’s Day is celebrated. For currency conversion, we used the average exchange rate for January 2021.
